The City of Guelph has released a new look at the Baker Street District Redevelopment plan, as part of the master plan for the City’s downtown core, which includes the construction of a new central library.
The City of Guelph unveiled the new Master Plan for the Baker Street District, which described in detail several parts of the overall project, and how they are expected to interact with each other.
According to the document, there are three new main buildings planned. The north-most building is set to feature the new Central library, a purpose built modern 89,000-square-foot branch, as well as 125 to 135 residential units above the branch. The central building will feature 11,000 square feet of retail on the ground level, and 180 – 190 residential units above. The building at the south end of the district is 62,100 square feet and is designated as ‘institutional use’.
In a video presentation of the district posted to the City’s website, the southern building can also be used for educational purposes or office space.
The plan also includes three open-space areas. The largest is a 21,000 square foot area, dubbed ‘Library Lane’, running between the Library and Retail/residential building. Another 18,514 square foot space sits in front of the central and southern buildings, with another 14,000 square feet set aside as an ‘urban square’.
Several open house sessions was originally scheduled for late March to showcase the design, however, due to the Global Pandemic and subsequent lockdown, those sessions were cancelled. The city is accepting public comments on the plan in place of those sessions, and will continue to do so until June 30th.
